Poor Translations Are Funny, But Bad For Business

TransPerfectTranslations asked:

Translators have very important jobs. Good translators know that it is not just about translating word for word.

Elizabeth Elting, President and CEO, TransPerfect Translations, one of the world’s leading translation companies says, “Accurately conveying the meaning when translating from one language to another is absolutely critical. Depending upon the subject matter, sometimes this can mean sticking closely to the source text and other times it requires a looser translation in order to best deliver the central meaning. A good translator knows this and that understanding and ability can make all the difference between getting your message across the way you intended and having your message misconstrued.”

Here are some examples of bad translations that really ruined the message:

“Drop your pants here for best results.”

-sign at a dry cleaning store in Tokyo “We take your bags and send them in all directions.”

-sign at a Scandinavian airport “Ladies may have a fit upstairs.”

-sign at a dry cleaning store in Bangkok “Please leave your values at the front desk.”

-sign in a hotel in Paris. “Here speeching American.”

-sign in a Moroccan shop. “No smoothen the lion.”

-sign in a zoo in the Czech Republic. “The lift is being fixed. During that time we regret that you will be unbearable.”

-sign in Bucharest hotel lobby “Teeth extracted by latest methodists.”

-sign in Hong Kong dentist’s office. “STOP! Drive Sideways.”

-detour sign in Japan. “Ladies, leave your clothes here and spend the afternoon having a good time.”

-sign in a Rome laundry. “If you consider our help impolite, you should see the manager.”

-sign in an Athens hotel. “Our wines leave you nothing to hope for.”

-on the menu of a Swiss restaurant “It is forbidden to enter a woman even a foreigner if dressed as a man.”

-in a Bangkok temple “Fur coats made for ladies from their own skin.”

-window of a Swedish furrier “Specialist in women and other diseases.”

-doctor’s office in Rome “When passenger of foot heave in sight, tootle the horn. Trumpet him melodiously at first, but if he still obstacles your passage then tootle him with vigor.” -car rental brochure in Tokyo.

There is no question that bad translators translated these signs and the results are funny. But when it comes to the legal, pharmaceutical or financial areas, it is not so funny and could be dangerous. As one of the leading translation companies in the world, TransPerfect Translations’ Liz Elting, “The reason we are so careful is that our business is no laughing matter. Could you imagine an improper translation of directions on a prescription drug packet or a misinterpretation of a legal brief? Translators must not only be experts in language but they also must be experts in the area of business.” Elting continues, “One of the biggest failures of a product was for the Chevy Nova in Latin American countries. ‘No va” in Spanish means no go, not a good name brand for a car.”

Guide to Website Hosting Plans

J.O. Moen asked:

One of the important aspects of developing a website is to follow a guide to website hosting plans. Websites can be constructed with one web page to thousands of pages.

Websites, like this one, display specially formatted documents. These documents are formatted with a special language of HTML (Hyper Text Markup Language). HTML documents are called web pages that make up websites.

A web host will then make sure their web servers handle the chores of the various websites they contain. These chores include monitoring internet traffic, moving websites from one server to another, deleting old websites, and adding new customer’s websites.

When you follow a guide to website hosting plans, you realize they come in four basic types.

THE BASICS

There are many web hosting companies out there on the internet. All will rent you space on their servers and offer you a wide range of services.

So where is one to start, when it comes to picking the right web host? The most important factor is making sure that the host provides everything you need.

For example, will you have an e-commerce site or a personal, information only site you share with just family and friends? These two types of sites have very stark differences in the services they need to operate effectively.

SUB DOMAIN – web plans that do not have their own web domain name. These websites reside in a sub directory of a primary domain. Including both free and paid web hosting plans, these types are cheaper and easier to set up than other plans. You also do not have to worry about registering a domain name.

A plan of this type is great for a personal website you share with friends and family. It would be less effective for an e-commerce site though. The major drawback being name recognition, since your website will be like branches off of a larger tree. The URLs of your websites would be longer and harder to remember.

VIRTUAL, a step above sub domain is a type of web host plan is the most common on the internet. With a higher price though, there is more freedom with content, size, and usage.

DEDICATED SERVER and COLOCATION Servers are the heavy hitters in the web hosting world. Dedicated plans, in the guide to website hosting plans, offer servers with a great deal of options and a large amount of tech support from the web host staff.

Power users of these hosting plans get a highly polished site with room for large amounts of data. Also, optimum levels of service, usage and control come with these site hosting plans.

Colocation is identical to dedicated except the server is owned by the user. The colocated server is located in the web host’s facility. They use the web host’s links to the internet and the provider’s server buildings and infrastructure.

How to Build a Web Store

Robert Riles asked:

Many people think that it is easy to build a web store and launch their business online. After all, all there is to it is just getting a good idea, buying a domain name and getting a web designing and hosting firm to do the rest. However, it is much easier said than done and it takes a lot of hard work, time and effort in order to build a web store that proves to be a success. Given below are a few tips that should help you in creating a web store that has a chance at making profit.

1.Create an extensively thought of and detailed business plan.

2.Once you have decided the product that you want to sell, make sure that you also have more than one supplier who gives you good prices and good delivery times.

3.Next, choose a good domain name for your site. Try to keep it relevant to what you are selling and as simple and easy to spell as possible.

4.Search extensively for the most used keywords when people are looking for products that you are selling. Try to incorporate the most relevant one into your url if possible, and use the others extensively on your web site in order to optimize it for search engine result pages.

5.Next comes getting a good host and designer for your web page. It is a good idea to contract a single company for designing, hosting and maintaining your website, since it will save you from a lot of hassle when your web site goes through the initial hiccups.

6.While your web site is being designed, keep the following things in mind. The site should be as professional looking as possible. It should not take a lot of time to open on a client computer. At the same time, it should not be dull or boring looking. The web site should be enriched with keywords and SEOs right at the inception. All the legal stuff regarding the privacy policy and the terms and conditions of sales, shipments and returns should be well taken care of before you launch your site online.

7.A good web designing firm should be able to develop content for your website that is rich with SEOs. At the same time, your web hosting and designing firm should be able to put in the appropriate meta tags and keywords on your web site to make it search engine friendly.

8.However, just making your website search engine friendly is not enough, and you will also need to post as many back links to your websites on forums, blogs and other related web sites as possible. Post your url in as many directories as possible.

9.Advertising with the relevant directories and websites should also lead to generation of some relevant traffic to your web site.

Taking care of the above points while you build your web store should definitely increase its chances of being successful. Remember that getting the right help and tools while you build your web store is extremely important for creating a profit making web store.
